Do you remember Daily Affirmations with Stuart Smalley from SNL?
"I'm good enough. I'm smart enough. And doggone it, people like me."
The more I work with people in a coaching and training capacity, the more I realize just how prevalent is it for highly intelligent people to entertain debilitating negative self-talk. Because of sketches like this, and probably other negative connotations shared in pop culture or otherwise, I never thought of affirmations as a serious tool.
Until I started coaching.
Now I absolutely love and believe in the power of positive affirmations spoken out loud to yourself on a regular basis. Affirmations don't have to be catchy, cheesy, or untrue, and they can be powerful for reframing negative situations.
"I feel like I really screwed up that presentation. But my performance at work doesn't define me and my worth. Failure makes me human and help me grow."
I'm not hiding from failure. I'm not lying to myself about how I feel in a moment of discouragement. I'm not throwing superficial mantras at myself in the mirror. Affirmations can be true, kind, and full of hope.
Try it for a month and see how it goes.
